Freedom From Not Being Enough

We all know that moment when the voice in our head pops up and tells us we’re not enough. Not smart enough or spiritual enough or confident enough. Not enough of anything.

I’ve battled that voice behind the drum kit, on the bike, and even in the pulpit. What I’ve learned is this: the voice isn’t the enemy. It’s an old friend that learned to protect us at a young age and never updated its job description. It still thinks we’re seven years old and fragile.

But we’re the ones driving the car now.

We get to say, “Thanks for looking out for me. I’ve got this.”

That’s where freedom begins.

Jesus wasn’t trying to make bad people good. He was waking people up. He was reminding us that the Divine lives within us, not out there somewhere. When we touch that truth, “not enough” starts to fall apart. We remember who we are.

Loving ourselves is how we retrain the inner world. The judgement softens, the pressure eases, and life opens up. I’ve had nights behind the drums where I felt like I nailed it and nobody noticed. I’ve also had nights where I thought I blew it and people were moved to tears. Turns out we’re not great judges of our own worth. Better to let presence lead.

So here’s the practice...

Take a breath.

Slow it down.

Talk gently to the inner voice.

Let joy in. Let pain in.

Say yes to life.

Stay here in this moment.

When we do that, “not being enough” loses its power.

We remember we are enough because we exist, because we breathe, because the light within us is real.

And from that place, we can love others without needing anything back.

That’s freedom.
